The Unheard Voices Project is making a difference. By casting a unique lens on the challenges facing working people, it is drawing public attention to their struggles. In the past two years, the documentary Wild Caught has had a concrete impact on Sneads Ferry: it helped empower the local fishermen to fight incorporation of their small town and stand up for their right to carry on fishing-related activities on their own land. It also played a role in the North Carolina legislature's allocating $70 million to preserve working waterfronts for fishermen.
In addition to ongoing documentary work, our next challenge is to develop a computer-based, searchable video archive to share footage with scholars, sociologists, filmmakers and journalists.
